Vihiga hit Palos to boost promotion quest
Vihiga United jumped from position four to two in the National Super League standings after hitting Palos 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Moi Stadium in Kisumu in a mid-week fixture to keep their hopes of promotion to the Kenyan Premier League alive.
With two games remaining to the end of the season, Vihiga knew a win would propel their quest to the top -tier and they did not disappoint, with Patrick Okullo’s penalty making the difference.
The victory was a shot in the arm for the club as they dislodged Wazito FC to occupy the only other automatic promotion slot.United are now behind leaders Ushuru FC who have 75 points from 34 rounds,
However, Vihiga tie on 74 points with Wazito, though the former enjoy a superior goal difference .With this victory, the Edward Manoah coached side now have fate in their own hands before curtains come down on the second division in under two-weeks.
The breakthrough for the visitors came in the 64th minute when Kevin Monyi appeared to have fouled Charles Okwemba in the danger area and centre referee Caroline Wanjala pointed to the spot amidst protests from the hosts.
When Patrick Okullo stepped forward, he made no mistake, firing in his 17 goal of the campaign- the highest in the league.
Palos, after the defeat, remain seventh on the log with 45 points.
