Vihiga Queens thump Wadadia to launch title defence in style

Vihiga Queens began their title defence off to a flying start beating Wadadia 2-0 at the Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday as the 2020/21 Women Premier League campaign got underway.

Teresia Engesha scored from the penalty spot after a Wadadia FC player committed a foul in the box before  second-half substitute Topistarr Situma scored the winning goal in the 76th minute to ensure a comfortable victory for the hosts.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Vihiga Queens coach Alex Alumira said he’s happy with the win but noted that her girls are not in the form and needs to improve ahead of their next match.

“I’m happy for the win but it looks like the players need more training as the game displayed is not to my satisfaction, I award them 40% in the first half and 60% in the second  half, it has been hard for the girls not training for a number of months, ”said Alumira.

Alumira was also magnanimous in the win giving credit to their opponents.

“Wadadia is a good team, I loved how they played, however, we’re going back to camp and I am confident my girls will win with more goals next time,” said the soft-spoken tactician.

Wadadia FC coach Rashid Sumba said her girls were under pressure meeting the three times champions.

“We have lost yes, but my girls had some tension as Queens are a big team. My girls have not trained together since some girls have been at the university doing their exams, I am confident we are losing no game in our upcoming matches,” said Rashid.

Vihiga Queens will face SEP Oyugis in their next match as Wadadia face Tranzoia Falcons.
