Vihiga renew rivalry with Thika Queens in WPL

Champions Vihiga Queens could return to the summit of the Kenyan Women Premier League (WPL) table when they play Thika Queens on Saturday.

The match will mark the first time the two sides meet since last year’s play-off final in which Thika were deposed as champions.

Both sides have not been in action over the last three WPL rounds since their respective key players were out on international duty with the national team Harambee Starlets.

During that period Thika have been dislodged from the top of the standings with Eldoret Falcons taking charge after pummeling Baringo Starlets 14-0 in Eldoret. It took their points tally to 17, two clear of second-placed Thika.

Alex Alumira’s Vihiga are five points off pace but the head coach exuded confidence his charges will rise up again.

“I am happy to see my players back after a one-month commitment with Harambee Starlets. They really did a good job but now the focus is on our weekend match. My girls are in good condition and I believe we shall overcome Thika,” Alumira told Citizen Digital.

In other matches, bottom-placed Vihiga Leeds will square it out with Gaspo Women at the Mumias Complex on Saturday while Mombasa Olympic entertain Mathare United at the Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa.

Coastal-based side Spedag will wrap up Saturday action when they entertain Makolanderes in Mbaraki.
