Vihiga United at a crossroads after playoffs cancellation

Vihiga United players are caught between rock and a hard place as they contemplate their future.

The team’s players were all but looking forward to a playoff match with Kisumu All Stars for a ticket to the FKF Premier League but that is now uncertain after the first leg match which was set October 7 was called off as the government maintains its ban on contact sport.

The aggregate winner over two legs was to earn the ticket to the 2020/21 FKF PL.

Understandably, with some of them having set sights on jumping to the top-tier, all these dreams now hang in the balance.

Team head coach Sammy Okoth said the move to cancel the playoffs has heft his players at a crossroads.

“Some players want to play in the Premier League, they believed that after the games at hand(playoffs) they would have decided on whether to stay in their current clubs or not. But with the postponement it is hard to predict and plan,” said the soft-spoken coach.

Okoth added that his dream was to see his side re-join the top-tier and hopes that this dream will still be fulfilled.

He however fears that with the uncertainty over the playoff dates, laxity could creep in thereby blurring the focus of his players.

“We had put everything in place, but my worry might come from the players, you know when you leave players on their own without closely monitoring, you are not sure whether they will still be in their previous form, you can never know how some of them are handling themselves, but I have a lot of confidence in my squad I pray they don’t drift,” said Okoth.

Okoth says their efforts to resume training has not been successful after the sports ministry failed to approve their request to train under the set Covid 19 regulations, a move the club officials are still following up on to see the players back on the field.
