Kenyan Premier League (KPL) side Vihiga United are on a go-slow, protesting unpaid salaries and below par treatment.

On Tuesday morning, the players turned up for a training session at the Kidundu Stadium but failed to take part in a meaningful work out, hampering their preparations for their upcoming KPL duel against Sony Sugar.

The development comes with the club’s main sponsor County Government of Vihiga on spot for failing to release funds in time.

According to club spokesperson Peter Atsiaya, notice was given last week that operations would come to a halt if players salary issue was not sorted by Monday, December 17.

“They (players) have not received their salary for November, they were only paid in until October. No reason has been given yet why they were not paid in November,’’ affirmed  Atsiaya.

Besides the salaries, players are claiming winning bonuses totaling Ksh.1.8 million, accruing from five months.

“In total the club has a huge debt, apart from what is owed to the players. So far, Ksh. 7 million is needed to settle all the debts. The county government is aware and has been silent about it,” Atsiaya.

Uniforms, hotel bills, and transport expenditures are some of the services the club has been enjoying in debt since last season.

Vihiga are currently fifth in the KPL, after featuring in two matches, winning one and drawing to bag four points.
