Wafula hopes to inspire women to take up golf

Young Kenyan golfer Naomi Wafula hopes to inspire more women to take up the sport after she made history  becoming the first lady golfer to make the cut to the next two rounds at the Safari Tour Golf Series at the par 72 Sigona Golf Club course.

“I’m very happy and it even motivates me more, to go further. I am excited to have made the cut and making history as the first Kenyan lady golfer to make the cut in the Safari Tour, and hopefully this will be a motivation to other junior golfers,” said Wafula.

The 22-year-old  Wafula is among the three amateurs to make the cut alongside Adel Balala and Paul Muchangi but on T8 being the best placed amateur after yesterday’s play, she says playing with men isn’t easy.

“We are playing from the men’s tee box and that’s a longer distance but I am grateful to God for the strength and concentration throughout the 4 hours in 2 days.

We’re are just two ladies with the men. I scored +2 on Sunday from the men’s tee box and played with pro Robson from Zimbabwe which was a great outing. Level par on round 2 wasn’t that bad,”added Naomi.

Three pros are part of the 22 golfers who have made the cut to play in the third round of the Sigona leg of the Safari Tour Golf Series with nine more including Railways Club Alfred Nandwa failing to make the cut.

Edwin Mudanyi is on top of the leader board, with rounds of 2 under par 70 on Sunday and level par 72 (Monday), getting a one stroke lead with teeing starting at 9:30am today.

Dismas Indiza, Samuel Njoroge and David Wakhu follow respectively with a cumulative total of 1 under par 143.

Brian Njoroge, Eric Ooko and Robson Chinhoi of Zimbabwe are on level par 144.

The 2020/21 Safari Tour which is the only pro golf tour in East Africa, teed off at Limuru Country Club earlier in the month where Greg Snow emerged  top.

On the second week of the month at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Zimbabwean Robson Chinhoi was the winner with Indiza taking the bragging rights at the Vet Lab last week.
