Wambua says Lionesses SOYA nod proof of growth

Kenya Lionesses head coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua says he is humbled after his team was named the 2017 Women’s Sports Team of the Year at the SOYA Awards ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) on Wednesday.

Lionesses beat competition from Kenya Women’s Volleyball team, Telkom Orange (Hockey), the national cricket team and Harambee Starlets to scoop the team award at the annual black-tie gala.

“I am humbled by this prestigious award after falling short a number of times, and obviously going forward this is the motivation we need ahead of a busy schedule ahead.

“It’s a clear testament of our hard work and resilience in our training routines and above all God first. Last year we were runners-up and the previous year we were second runners-up so it shows how women’s rugby has grown in Kenya,” Wambua said.

The Lionesses reached the last eight at the 2017 Women’s Sevens World Series Qualifiers in Hong Kong and also booked a spot for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in April.

“I believe this award will be a morale booster as we head for the World Series qualifiers in Hong Kong and hopefully go a step better,” the tactician added.

The tactician was positive the row between Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), the Government and their sponsors will soon be resolved in order for the related parties to honor their assignments.

“It is demoralizing to just sit and watch the current state going on, but I am optimistic something constructive will come up and be able to put aside this challenges that the Union is facing,” Wambua added.

The tactician also revealed that the government has held talks with the KRU administration on how they can end the current standoff.

“Yes it a challenge for the national teams given the fact that this is a world cup and commonwealth games year but the relevant bodies are working on it to see that amicable solution is met.

“The team will automatically travel for the Sydney and Hamilton legs, we cannot afford to miss those important legs and my prayer is the government will consider Shujaa,” he underscored.

Kenya Lionesses failed to travel to the Dubai Sevens last year due to lack of funds according to Chairman Richard Omwela and the team will have to wait for the Government to come in and facilitate their assignments.
