Wanga on the double as Homeboyz puts Yanga to the sword

Kakamega Homeboyz launched their quest for the 2018 Super Cup title in style, beating pre-match favourites Yanga SC 3-1 at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru on Sunday.

Veteran striker Allan Wanga was in sparkling form bagging a brace while Wycliffe Opondo also found the mark as Homeboyz proved too good for the Tanzanian giants.

The troublesome Wanga gave Homeboyz the lead in the 25th minute resulting from a move on the right side with Moses Mudavadi sliding in a pass to the striker who lifted the ball over the Yanga custodian.

The Paul Nkata led side was in ascendancy asserting their presence into the game after Yanga’s early dominance waned out.

A stubborn Wanga was a pain for Yanga’s defence, stripping the opposition off possession deep in their half and winning a penalty for his side in the 29th minute after being brought down in the box, and he made no mistake with the awarded penalty, rifling in with poise and elegance.

Opondo then settled the nerves in the 86th minute, restoring his side’s two-goal advantage after Simon Mattheo had given Yanga what appeared like a lifeline with a sweetly struck goal from free kick that was poorly conceded by Wanyika.

Homeboyz, who largely controlled the second half of the game, kept on pressing, and the guests cracked on the 86th minute when substitute  Opondo shook the net.

Homeboyz could have scored a fourth when Estone Esiye’s header was cleared off the line, late, late into the game.
