Wangilas Meru Vikings in early preps for EA School Games fiesta

Meru School hockey team coach Enock Wangila expects the astounding performance by his charges during the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) to continue in the forthcoming East African Games.

Wangila is already counting direct dividends from the preparations his team is doing for August fiesta in Arusha, drawing from the areas of weakness exposed during the nationals.

Also known as Meru Vikings, the team is raring to storm the EA games in style, maximizing on the “rare” opportunity according to the experienced coach.

“As a team we thank God for the ticket to the East African competition, but we know the responsibility that rests on our shoulders to represent our region and the entire country. We have to at our best, that’s why we started preparing for the games as soon as resumed term two sessions.

“We are already addressing the key areas we felt our local competitors exposed us in, because we learnt a lot too from them,” offered Wangila, acknowledging the support exhibited by the school management in the journey.

Speed was noted to be one of the major areas Vikings have to improve in as the Arusha journey gathers momentum.

“I noticed some mistakes like lack of speed proper strength. To achieve this we have lined up friendly matches with KEMU University, Chuka University, Meru University and Meru Scorpions  who are the hockey kingpins in Meru,” Wangilla adds.

Psychologically preparing, the team has coined a slogan “Meru School Vikings 2019 to East Africa,” which Wangila says is a solemn reminder of what has to be done in Arusha.
