Wanjiru was unconscious when we received him, doctor says

The late Beijing Olympics men marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru was in an unconscious state when he was received at the Nyahururu District Hospital, the doctor who received him confirmed in her report.

According to the report filed by Doctor Elizabeth Kibe, the deceased was confirmed dead after 45minutes into the midnight as the inquest into Wanjiru’s death that occurred at 12:00AM, May 16 2011 continued on Monday.

The report by Kibe, who is said to be out of the country at the moment, was presented before court by Dr. Kirimi Kinywa – a senior staff at Nyahururu County Hospital (then District Hospital).

A Nairobi Court before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi heard that Wanjiru was taken to the hospital by people who only identified themselves as relatives, a narrative disputed instantly by the deceased family lawyer.

In reference to Doctor Kibe’s report, Dr. Kirimi further told the court that the doctor was told Wanjiru fell from a height of a balcony, had blood stains within the nostril and mouth. Further, his eyes were dilated and his body wasn’t responding to action on his body.

The doctor suspected that Wanjiru had a severe head injury even though could not be seen externally.

“His life was deteriorating so fast that he only had basic tests done on him,” the doctor said.

Wanjiru was pronounced dead before other tests were done to determine what the really problem was.

Wanjiru died in 2011 aged just 24 after falling from a first-floor balcony at his home in the town of Nyahururu.

The cause of his death has never been fully established but his mother, Hannah Wanjiru Kamau, is convinced he was murdered.

During an earlier inquest into Wanjiru’s death, Hannah sensationally claimed that his son was murdered by six men who had conspired with his widow Trizah Njeri.
