Wanyama keen to cement Spurs midfield spot

Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama is confident he can stake his claim as a regular starter for Tottenham Hotspurs after enjoying a good start to life at the White Hart Lane.

The combative midfielder made a summer switch from Southampton and his addition has turned the North London outfit to top title contenders, currently sitting second in the league with 17 points from seven matches, just a point behind leaders Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino has handed the Lion of Muthurwa a starting berth in all seven, and recently rewarded the Argentine with a man-of-the-match performance against City in a match they went on to win 2-0. Thanks to his relentless pressing, hard tackling and game shutting approach, Spurs boast the meanest defence in the league, letting in just three thus far.

“If you work hard the manager will always give you a chance to play and when you are playing you also have to show him why you deserve to play. I hope to continue playing well and keep my position in the team,” Wanyama told Premier League News.

Last season, Wanyama was sent off three times while playing for Southampton  and having already accumulated three yellow cards these season he knows the importance of being careful with his tackles.

“This is my fourth year in the Premier League and despite never being red-carded in the first two, last season was one to forget. That’s is not me and am hoping to avoid that this season,” he asserted.

The former Celtic player who missed Stars latest victory over DR Congo has already registered one goal, a winning strike against Crystal Palace in August to make his side the only unbeaten team in the league heading into the weekend clash against West Brom.

Last term, Eric Dier was Spurs’ main defensive midfielder but has been relegate to the bench by Wanyama, who has by far added sufficient cover to fill the Englishman’s boots.
