Wanyama wins PL Goal of the Month

Tottenham Hotspur’s Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama admitted his jaw-dropping half-volley against Liverpool was ‘one of the best goals’ he has ever scored as he received his Premier League Goal of the Month for February.

The Harambee Stars captain stepped off the bench in the 79th minute with Spurs 1-0 down at Anfield on February 4 – and within a minute had drawn the visitors level with a net-buster that arrowed into the top corner.

From there, Harry Kane missed a penalty, Mohamed Salah appeared to have won it for Liverpool in stoppage time before the English striker popped up with a last-gasp spot kick to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw.

“I reacted before the Liverpool players and I thought I’d just let it go. The ball was bouncing and I didn’t want to think too much so I just let it fly. It was a good goal and I’m happy to win Goal of the Month.” Wanyama told tottenhamhotspur.com as he collected his trophy.

Asked to compare his strike with the 40-yard goal he scored for Southampton at Hull City in November, 2014, Victor said: “I think this one was much better because the keeper was in goal. For the other one, the keeper was out of the goal and that was a bit easier. This one was just unstoppable!”

So does Victor plan on adding to his tally before the end of the season?

“It depends – if the ball is good, then why not?” he said. “Hopefully I can get some chances like that and I can get more. I just want to keep on helping the team.”
