Waruru, Aswani strike to power Sofapaka past Rangers

Former Ulinzi Stars marksman Stephen Waruru and Kepha Aswani were on target on Saturday afternoon at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos as Sofapaka ran out 2-1 winners over Posta Rangers in a tough Kenyan Premier League match.

Gearson Likonoh pulled one back for Rangers but it was not enough to salvage a point for the Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omolloh coached side.

The win was Sofapaka’s second in three days, coming hot on the heels of a similar victory over troubled AFC Leopards at the Narok Stadium on Wednesday.

The result in Machakos ended Posta’s unbeaten streak as Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo’s men slipped into seventh on the log on six points while Sofapaka (9) climbed to fourth pending results from other matches.

Waruru opened the scoring in the 42nd minute for his first ever goal for the Batoto ba Mungu since completing a move to the 2009 champions in January with Aswani putting the hosts 2-0 up three minutes into the second half.

Likonoh pulled one back for the visitors in the 81st minute but despite their relentless push, there would be no equalizing goal as the hosts held on to take all the three points.

Elsewhere, Chemelil left it late as they edged Zoo Kericho FC 2-1 while Vihiga United and Nakumatt FC battled to a barren draw at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
