Wavinya: Govt to inject more funds to Wote Stadium project

Transport and Public Works Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Wavinya Ndeti has reiterated the Government’s commitment in ensuring Wote Stadium project is completed within the set timelines.

Wavinya who toured the 45-percent complete facility Thursday , expressed satisfaction with the ongoing works at the site adding that government will inject more funds to ensure completion by the end of December.

The former Kathiani Member of Parliament said they will engage the Ministry of Sports to fast-track the approvals of the recent cost variations of Sh.12 million to avoid another possible stalling of works.

Last week, the contractor Mark Muendo, who is working with the Taphes and Nitram Company, said the multi-million shilling project may not be completed on time owing to a last-minute change in design.

“We’re happy with the ongoing progress and we are sure the contractor will beat the stipulated timelines. We’ll engage our clients the Ministry of Sports to approve the cost variations because the contractor has told us they need extra Sh.12 million following the adjustments of some parts of the facility,” Wavinya said.

Wavinya added that once the project is over the county’s sports status will grow immensely with economy also set to improve.

“The completion of the facility will see many benefits coming to Makueni from massive growth of sporting talents to the improvement of the economy because many international sports events will be held in this facility,” she added.

The construction of the 15,000-seater stadium was launched in May 2017 but its construction stalled a few months after the last general elections but contractor signed a return-to-work agreement with the Ministry of Sports in June and undertook to complete remaining works, after a further allocation of Sh.350 million.

In June, Sports CS Amina Mohammed said the facility was among 10 stadiums which have stalled across the country and are earmarked to be completed by December 31 following a presidential directive.
