Wazalendo get cash boost ahead of Africa Club Championships

Wazalendo Hockey Club received a major shot in the arm in their preparations for the Africa Cup for Club Championships with a Sh 100,000 boost from technology firm, Kocela Company.

The club had launched an ambitious online fundraising platform, M-Changa in July as they target to raise a sum of Sh7 million for the championships that is slated for Blantyre, Malawi.

According to the club’s head of the ACCC committee, Moses Majiwa, they have already raised Sh850,000 for the continental showpiece which was earlier slated for later this month but has been postponed to next year owing to coronavirus.

“We are very grateful to Kocela for their support which is a massive boost in realising our target to grace the championships. However, we are only at 12 per cent of our target and we still appeal to other corporates to help us achieve our dream,” said Majiwa.

With the new dates for the annual tournament yet to be released, Majiwa said the team is leaving nothing to chance as they step up their training in readiness for the tourney.

“Although we are yet to resume contact training, our boys have been training in small groups in order to remain in shape as we await communication for the new dates,” said Majiwa.

Kocela CEO Abel Masai who presented a dummy cheque on Sunday at the City Park said they take pride in supporting sports teams having sponsored the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) before.

“We are really passionate about sports and its ability to bring us together that is why we sponsored KHU last year and we are happy to also boost Wazalendo and it is our desire to continue doing the same in future,” said Masai.

Wazalendo skipper, Bright Kezengwa said the morale is high in the squad despite lack of competitive matches with the KHU league having been suspended over the pandemic.

“We are continuing with our preparations despite the postponement of the event and anytime we will be called upon we will be ready,” said Kezengwa.

Wazalendo and Butali Sugar Warriors are the two Kenyan sides that qualified for the annual tournament in the men’s category.
