Wazito roar back to NSL summit albeit for hours

Wazito FC roared back to the top of the National Super League (NSL) log, for a few hours at least, with a hard fought 1-0 win over visitors Bidco United 1-0 in an early kick off match of the triple header at Camp Toyoyo grounds on Wednesday.

The hosts who were on the back of a 2-1 loss against Eldoret Youth that saw them slip to fourth, put in match-winning show as they sought to dislodge Kisumu All Stars, Nairobi Stima and Ushuru FC to reclaim the top spot.

They could however lose their top spot in the next four hours should either Kisumu, Stima or Ushuru win their  matches later this afternoon.

The attacking trident of Derrick Onyango, Victor Ndinya and Joseph Waithira, however, for the better part of the opening half, struggled to break down the visitors’ back line, Bidco often opting to hit on the break.

The first half was headed for a barren stalemate, until Paul Aqua’s individual brilliance broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, unleashing a left-footed drive into the bottom right corner, leaving visiting custodian Franklin Mwenda humbled.

Wazito under the tutelage of Fred Ambani, could have had a two-goal cushion heading to the break had Teddy Osok found the target after a fine pass from speedy winger Victor Ndinya had set him up in the box.

Osok went for the top right corner with a right footed curled shot, missing the target by a mile.

The second half, under the tough scotch of the sun, had the two outfits giving it their all as the game yearned for its second goal.

Goal scorer Aqua was at the centre of a promising counter attack, just before the hour mark, roaring down the right flank as Bidco left back Geoffrey Kariuki gave a chase, only to earn a booking for a tactical foul on the electrifying winger.

Marauding Wazito right back Wilson Anekeya got on the back of it, swinging in a teasing cross that was parried away by Mwenda.

Following the win, Wazito are atop the NSL log on 55 points after 27 rounds, and could still fall back to fourth if Kisumu All Stars, Nairobi Stima and Ushuru all win their matches later in the day.

Antony Akhulia’s Bidco are eighth on 41 points after suffering an eighth loss of the season.
