WBC irked by sluggish Kenya ahead of seminar

Kenya is facing possible sanctions from the World Boxing Council (WBC) for their sluggish preparation of Thursday’s Africa Boxing Union Seminar.

WBC vice-president Houcine Houichi pulled no punches as he tore into local officials for a botched preparation of the event that will be held at the the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

Houichi who is also the African Boxing Union chief said he was irritated to learn that Kenyan State officials were unaware the event would be held in the country and promised the WBC would punish those culpable for it.

“Some high authorities in this country are not aware about this seminar. Not even the Sports Cabinet Secretary. WBC gave Africa this chance and we gave it to Kenya but I am shocked nothing has been done,” Houichi said.

This year will mark only the second time the event is hosted in the continent with the WBC keen to offer refresher courses for African officials on the changing rules of boxing in judging, refereeing and supervision.

More than 100 individuals from across the continent will be examined in the seminar and those who will qualify will be selected to officiate in international competitions.

The event will run until Friday.
