We had the title on our hand; it just required confirmation-Openda

After clinching the Kenya Hockey Union league title for an unprecedented 20th time, Telkom are now shifting their focus on the Africa Cup for Club Championships slated for January 20-27 in Accra, Ghana.

The Jos Openda-coached side humiliated league minnows Multimedia University (MMU) 6-0 on Sunday to not only clinch the title with two matches to spare but also continue their unbeaten streak to 18 matches while also shipping in a paltry three goals.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Openda said that they had the league on their hands from the onset and hailed his charges for the stellar campaign they have enjoyed so far.

“For us we had the league from the word go, it was only a matter of confirmation. Even though we won it unbeaten, our desire was not to concede a single goal,” said Openda.

With less than a week remaining to the Continental championships, Openda also revealed that they are not resting on their laurels as they seek to successfully defend the crown they won last year in Nairobi.

” I have a rough idea of basically how we are going to approach the games,  it will not be different from what we have been doing in the past although Ghana is normally very hostile, so we try and see how cool our nerves will be while playing there,” revealed Openda.

On the same breath, Kenya Police on Saturday managed to clinch the corresponding men title after thrashing KU 6-1 to successfully dethrone defending champions Strathmore University Gladiators with two matches to spare.

Despite their coronation on Saturday, it was business as usual for the law enforcers on Sunday as they dismantled Wazalendo 3-0 in their penultimate match of the season to move their points tally to 76 with one match to go.

According to Police assistant coach, Patrick Mugambi, despite their league triumph, they are still hungry for a win in their last match of the season where they will be up against former Champions Butali Warriors.

“Our celebrations were short-lived because we have to keep the fire burning especially in our last match against Butali .It is thus unaccepted for us to just relax because we have won the league,” charged Mugambi.

The league triumphs for the two teams overshadowed other league matches in which JKUAT beat hosts Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) 2-0 as Vikings were held to a barren draw by KU, who were later humbled 4-0 by Strathmore University women.

At the same time, Sliders beat MMU 4-0 as Strathmore University Gladiators edged Greensharks 3-1.
