We have no equal in Kenya, GSUs Tarus declares

Barely a day after successfully retaining their Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men league title, General Service Unit (GSU) head coach Gideon Tarus has declared only international challenge can help his charges polish their skills for next year’s Africa Club Championship.

According to Tarus, Kenyan teams have failed to give him tough opposition, having dominated the local scene for the last three years, bragging for being 13-time champions.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after winning in 3-0 against Prisons in the final match of the round robin playoffs, Tarus hinted at exposing his players to international touch before the continental fiesta.

“I need several friendlies to know my weakness and my important part that am going to use when we get to the African championship. The problem is that I don’t have a strong challenge in Kenya. If we have to polish this team, we have to go beyond our national boundaries,” said Tarus.

Tarus added that the north African countries that dominating the championship have mastered the basics and have been playing with big teams in build up matches, hence performing well overall.

GSU haven’t performed well in the past years in the Africa championship, finishing 17th in 2016 and 2017 respectively, before settling for position five this year.

The head coach further added that they will also work on the reception and blocking which in the past has cost the team possible glories.

“My boys will now go and rest until January, before assembling back preparing for the club championship probable in March or April,” said Tarus.

In the just concluded KVF club championship, the paramilitary side produced the three best players, including the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Abuid Chirchir, best blocker Simon Kipkorir and best setter Brian Melly.

Chirchir, has the same view as the coach going beyond the norm in the continental championship preparations will determine how they fair.

“Our weaknesses as a team are not too much, it’s the way we conduct ourselves and approach our opponents that determines the far we can go as a team,” said Chirchir.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Prisons team will represent the country in the championship for the women side.
