Western-based NSL clubs want league stopped

Eight National Super League (NSL) clubs from the Covid-19 hotspot counties are eagerly waiting to learn their fate following their application to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to have the second-tier league halted citing huge traveling expenses and ‘unfairness’.

The eight clubs namely Migori Youth, Gusii FC, Kisumu All Stars, Soy United, Kisumu Hot Stars, Vihiga Bullets, APS Bomet and Silibwet Leons jointly appealed to FKF to stop the league as many of them are not ready to incur the huge traveling costs associated with securing new venues and related logistics.

They also say they could lose their home advantage which is crucial as the season heads to home stretch.

This comes in the wake of the government ban on social gathering and sports events in the Covid-19 hotspot counties.

Migori Youth chairperson Abdi Aziz Osman is optimistic of a favorable response from the Nick Mwendwa-led organization.

In their application the clubs argue it is unfair for the league to proceed when many of the  clubs are struggling to hold regular training sessions due to government restrictions.

“We held an online meeting and unanimously agreed to request the federation to stop the league due to many factors we feel are necessary.

“Many clubs cannot hold training sessions as it’s unlawful according to the government. Also, the traveling expenses are too high.

“At the same time, many teams will lose their home advantage which is very important as the league heads to a close,” he observed.

Elsewhere, Fortune Sacco club secretary Julius Kariuki says his side is on course to earn a promotion if they can win their two games at hand.

After a go-slow threatened to peg them back, the Kianyaga-based side bounced back with a series of impressive results seeing them rise to number six on the NSL log.

Kariuki is adamant they will finish among the top two teams that will receive automatic qualification.

“We are doing well and I’m happy with the way, the players have reacted recently.

“If we can win our games in hand, we will be level with third-placed Talanta.

“We will try our best to finish strongly.”
