What worked for Mwanjas KCB to lift Sevens Circuit gong

KCB RFC head coach Dennis Mwanja believes his charges confidence, consciousness and taking each match at a time were their secrets to success this season, winning the National Sevens Circuit.

The bankers came from behind to beat Impala Saracens 26-21 to win the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa over the weekend to collect 22 points ending the season with 116 points, 18 points ahead of second place Mwamba RFC.

“We came in the circuit knowing that we’re not comfortable having 10 points like we did last year which never turned out well for us, so this year we came with a very silent confidence.

“We took each game at a time and reassessed our goals because we had said from the beginning we wanted to win the circuit, so we had to work towards our goal,” he added.

KCB RFC targeted to equal their success with the 15s side which has won the Kenya Cup the last three seasons, which Mwamja says was a good challenge for him.

“The success of the 15’s side was quite different with that of the sevens side. We therefore synchronised the aim of raising the standard of the club, and we had to go all the way to match the success of the 15’s side,” echoed Mwanja.

The former Shujaa player revealed the season journey was well premeditated and the technical bench worked hard to sell the vision to the players, before the season kickoff.

“When we went to South Africa we planned for the season after the conclusion of Kenya Cup with the sevens  technical bench, we sat and agreed on winning the circuit and made it clear to the players who also embraced it,” charged Mwanja.

Alongside Driftwood sevens KCB bagged the Kakamega sevens, Dala Sevens and Christies sevens winning four out of six legs of the circuit.
