Why Telkoms alarm bell wont ring anytime soon

Women Premier League champions Telkom are not raising the alarm bell despite their slow start to the 2019 season after being held to a barren draw by Amira Sailors on Sunday at City Park.

The champions began life without veteran coach Jos Openda who opted to retire from his role at the end of last season after guiding his side to a record 21 domestic titles as well as a 10 Africa Club Championship crowns.

Speaking with Citizen Digital, Telkom assistant coach Judy Apioh said they are not worried despite the weekend noting that her charges spurned several chances in the course of the match.

“The league has just started so we aim to bounce back in our next match,” said Apioh.

The weekend outcome saw Telkom drop points for the first time in the top-tier league since July 2016 when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Strathmore University before finishing both the 2017 and 2018 with a 100 percent record.

The serial winners will now shift their focus to their next match against Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT) who have had a good start hammering Strathmore 9-0 in their opening fixture.

Apioh is confident of bouncing back to winning ways having bolstered the squad with 11 youngsters who are set to team up with the senior players.

“During our trials we managed to spot 11 young players who we will be slowly integrating to our team so that we can improve further,” added Apioh.

Meanwhile, 2017 men’s league champions Kenya Police were also held to a 1-1 draw by Nairobi Simba in their opening match of the season.

Police head coach Patrick Mugambi bemoaned the late penalty awarded to Simba which denied them the three points.

“I am not happy with the referee’s call to award them (Simba) a penalty, that should have been a short corner and not a penalty,” protested Mugambi.

Mugambi also rued the many opportunities that went unconverted. Police lost key talents in the ended transfer window despite with strikers Amos Barkibir and Calvins Kanu joining rivals Butali Sugar Warriors whom they’ll face on March 20.
