Winger Thiongo rallies Leopards to step up title fight ahead of league restart

AFC Leopards winger Peter Thiong’o believes the Kenyan league giants are ‘unstoppable’ at their best, challenging them to step up and challenge for the league title this season.

Thiong’o joined the den after a starring role with Kakamega Homeboyz in the 2019/20 season but has not hit the heights at the big cats with the league currently halted.

“I had an outstanding display with Homeboyz. I had several offers on the table, but the Leopards deal was more lucrative, negotiations would take place and upon agreement, I inked the contract at the den, ” Thiong`o told Citizen Digital, lifting the lid on factors that swayed his move to the den. “I must appreciate coach Muyoti for playing an active role in my development.”

Thiongo’s move to Ingwe before the current season began was among the biggest moves made in that transfer window.

He has said the transfer materialised after a ‘tough decision’.

“Joining Ingwe was a tough decision to make because of my then employer Homeboyz but one thing stood out – the club’s title ambitions,” Thiong`o concluded.

Leopards are enjoying one of their best league starts in years and sit third on the standings with 29 points. They can dislodge KCB FC in second if they win their two games in hand and will remain only a point behind leaders Tusker FC who are on 36, with the top division expected to resume on May 12.

Leopards, the country’s second most successful club, last won a top-flight league title in 1998 and Thiong’o believes the current squad has the quality to end that drought.

The club’s chairman Dan Shikanda promised to buy a house for each player if they delivered the league at the end of the season, and Thiong’o says they can use that pledge to fuel their ambition.
