With the title sealed, Telkom shifts focus to Africa Club Championship

Ten-time African Cup Club champions Telkom Kenya will use the remaining league fixture against rivals Strathmore University to prepare for the 2019 ACCC that will be held in Nigeria, Jos Openda, Telkom head coach has said.

Telkom has dominated the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women league for the last decade, winning the 2017 league title with a 100 percent record, and are set to do replicate the feat this term.

The Kenya hockey queens ruthlessly crushed bottom side Vikings 7-0 on Saturday in a league match to maintain their 100 percent run, with only one match to wrap up their  campaign.

And speaking to Citizen Digital in the wake of the win, Openda pointed out that he has shifted his focus to the   continental club championship.

“We have the title already and I believe we will finish our campaign unbeaten for the second season in a row. Right now my focus is on the club championship and we are using every match to prepare for it,” a confident Openda said.

The telecommunications giants finished second in the last ACCC outing held in Egypt after their quest for the sixth successive win was halted by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), losing 1-0.

He said: “We are wasting a lot of chances in front of goal and we need to work on that. At this time, we need to  use each and every chance that we create . I’m still pushing for more from my players because club champs is around the corner.”

In another league match, United States International University (USIU) earned the bragging rights in the students derby after thumping Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) 2-1 at City Park on Sunday .

The 2017 runners- up head coach admitted that they have failed to hit their season target of finishing at the top two, to book a ticket for the ACCC.

“It feels good when you win a match but the title is already gone. Telkom and Strathmore are way ahead of us and that means they will represent Kenya in the club championship,” Okeyo lamented after the match.

Telkom tops the top-tier league with 33 points after 11 games, Strathmore University coming second with 24 points .USIU are third with 13 points after nine matches.

Vikings, who have had a horrendous campaign are at the tail end with just one point in 11 games, having drawn one and lost 10.
