Okombes girlfriend surrenders, denies killing rugby star

A 37 -year woman accused of murdering rugby player Mike Okombe last Friday surrendered to police on Monday accompanied by her lawyer, but denied being involved in the murder.

Okombe, 27, was on Friday stabbed to death in Nakuru during a night out, where they were reported to be celebrating a birthday party of one of his friends .

It is alleged that during the event, a middle- aged woman stabbed Okombe with a kitchen knife after a disagreement, leading to his death.

Meanwhile, detectives are carrying on with investigations.

The former Kenya Simbas national player plied his trade at Nakuru RFC where he played as a flanker and was set to complete a move to Kabras Sugar.

Okombe renowned for his ball carrying skills and tenacity as a flanker played his last match for the Simbas in Kenya’s 34 – 10 victory over Hong Kong.

He began his club career at Western Bulls before joining Top Fry Nakuru where he won back- to- back Kenya Cup titles during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

The star had been out of action at the time of his death recovering from knee surgery and was on the brink of a major move to former Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar.

As detectives work round the clock to unravel the mystery of his death, the rugby fraternity has been thrown into fresh mourning following the demise of  former rugby player Peter Wekesa and his twin brother John Wekesa.

The duo was killed on Sunday night in a road accident in Mariakani,Mombasa.The departed are elder brothers to the late Andrew Wekesa, also former rugby player with Homeboyz .Wekesa killed in January this year in Kitengela.
