Work on Kinoru Stadium now ’round the clock’ for Chan

A second company will be contracted to double-team at the Kinoru Stadium as Local Organizing Committee looks to realize a 24-hour shift roster at the facility ahead of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

A delegation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) visited Kinoru for a third and final inspection tour on Wednesday to monitor the progress of construction works at the stadium which is one of five venues earmarked to host Chan.

The County Government of Meru oversaw the first phase of renovations before it the facility over to Sports Kenya for the second phase which has been estimated to cost between KSh700 – 800 million.

The second phase will comprise a new playing surface, a VIP lounge, media center and the installation of giant floodlights since the matches will be played in the evening.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa said the decision to work around the clock was reached ay in order to beat the November 14 deadline set by the continental body which is set to announce its verdict as to whether Kenya retains Chan’s hosting rights on September 23.

Mwendwa suggested countries – Morocco and South Africa – that had been lined up as alternative hosts for the biennial tournament might not be ready in time should Kenya be declared unprepared, saying the situation is a ‘do-or-die’.

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi hosted the delegation in a meeting with County Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga where it was agreed the VIP lounge will be constructed at a piece of land behind the stadium.

Mwendwa stated hotels have already been identified to host the teams and officials for the January 12 to February 5 duration of the competition.
