World champ Kiyeng scoops Police steeple title

Women 3000m steeplechase champion, Hyvin Kiyeng, reasserted her supremacy in her event by winning the 2016 AK/Kenya Police Inter Departmental Track and Field Championships crown on Friday as fellow Beijing winner, Asbel Kiprop punched his ticket to the men 1500m finals.

Kiyeng clocked 9:36.8 during the second day of the competition for the title closely followed by 2009 World Youth champion, Purity Cherono (9:39.1) while Lydiah Rotich took bronze in 9:43.2.

In the men’s 1500m semi-finals, 2008 Olympics winner and three-time world champion Kiprop, won in a time of 3:45.5 in and will lead Abraham Kiplagat, Joseph Kithii, Nixon Chepseba and others in the chase for honours in Saturday’s final.

“Racing here is part of my preparations for the Doha Diamond League and I have done different for speed work and endurance and I am hopeful for good performance as I focus on the Olympics.” Kiprop said during his post-race interview.

He admitted to missing his training partner and 1500m Beijing Worlds silver medalist, Elijah Managoi, who is running 800m also for speed work and who is the favourite in the event during at the final.

“Managoi is a leading athlete in 1500m. He is the kind of athlete who will get into a big race with the aim of winning and he is really talented. I’m hopeful that alongside, Silas Kiplagat, Ronald Kwemoi we will make it for the Summer Olympics,” Kiprop added.

The championships commenced on Thursday in heavy downpour that disrupted the morning session of the first day.

Moscow men 5000m winner, Isaiah Kiplangat Koech, braved the harsh weather and qualified for Saturday’s finals despite the unfavourable conditions.

Later in the hot and humid afternoon 2004 Olympics 5000m silver medallist, Isabella Ochichi, led from start to finish to win the 10000m women’s finals in 33:11.6, with Esther Chemutai  and Mercy Chemutai  finishing second and third in 33:44.7 and 34:11.8.

Action wraps on Saturday  with other famous athletes such as world champions, Julius Yego (men Javelin) and Nicholas Bett (men 400m Hurdles) as well as the Moscow 2013 women 800m titleholder, Eunice Sum among those expected grace the finals.
