World Cup 2021 Repechage qualifier postponed

The Rugby World Cup 2021 Repechage qualifier between Kenya and Colombia on Thursday became the latest sporting event to be affected by the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The fixture, which was scheduled to be held in Nairobi on April 18, was postponed to a later date according to the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Gangla Odour.

Gangla said the decision to postpone the tie was in support of the Government’s precautionary measures to protect public health against the fast spreading disease.

“While we are disappointed that the fixture cannot take place on the set date, the health and safety of the players and officials is of utmost importance. We fully support the Kenyan authorities hence our decision to postpone this fixture to a later date,” he said.

Kenya’s Lionesses earned their ticket to this stage of the competition after finishing second behind South Africa in the 2019 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup while Colombia’s Las Tucanes defeated Brazil 23-19 in their Sudamérica Rugby region playoff fixture on Saturday 7 March 2020.

This comes few days after the Ministry of Sports suspended all the foreign sporting assignments for a month as a precautionary measure to prevent the virus which continue to stretch far and wide.
