Wote stadium contractor optimistic of beating deadline after govt warning

The Wote stadium contractor is optimistic he will beat the four-month completion ultimatum issued by the Ministry of Sports.

Sports Principal Secretary Joe Okudo and Sports Kenya Chairman Fred Muteti Wednesday took issue with the slow pace of the construction works after touring the facility warning that the tender would be re-advertised if the contractor fails to hasten the pace of works.

The contractor, Mark Mutua, who returned to site last month after the ministry allocated a further Sh.350million for its completion however denied claims of laxity saying he is working round the clock and by end of October, he will hand over the facility that had stalled since 2017.

Sports CS Amina Mohammed said the facility was among ten stadiums which have stalled across the country and which will be completed by end of this year in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s new directive.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Mutua is confident that Taphes and Nitram Company, which is undertaking the construction works, will beat the government timeline, adding that they have redesigned some areas of the facility and are awaiting approval from the company’s consultants before the works restart in earnest.

“It’s only three weeks since we returned to the site and now people have started to give us threats. As the contractor of the facility I want to hand over a world class stadium and I will not do shoddy work just because I want to beat the deadline.

“After resuming works we found out that there was water underneath, exactly where the pavilion of the stadium will be, and we had to redesign again and now we are awaiting approval from our consultants. However, the work is ongoing in the other parts of the stadium like now the perimeter wall is taking shape,” he said.

He went on: “I can assure you that Makueni will realize its first state-of-the-art stadium by the end of October, so I request officials from the ministry to allow us to do our job and we will not fail them,” he added.

Last month, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed toured the facility where she announced the revival of the stalled works ordering the completion of the construction of the stadium by end of October.

The CS said the stadium was among ten stadia which have stalled across the country and which will be completed by end of this year in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s new directive.
