WPL leaders Vihiga crush Soccer Queens

The Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League champions Vihiga Queens put the entire league on notice after they demolished Soccer Queens 6-1 at the Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday.

A hat-trick from prolific Topistar Nafula, a brace by Engesha Tereza and lone goal by Achieng’ Maurine were enough to hand the hosts the crushing victory.

Vihiga were the better side from start to finish, dominating the play and they should have gone a goal up after 17 minutes but Tereza Engesha blasted her effort wide after she had been put through by Cynthia Shilawatso.

Nafula beat goalkeeper Paula Muhonja with a tap in moments later for the breakthrough after a clever delivery by Shilawatso into the box.

Nafula was proving to be a menace for the visiting defence with her darting run in the 26th minute creating a chance for Engesha to chest down a ball and aim at goal but was again unable to find the target.

She would not be denied for the third time trying as she capitalised on a defensive lapse to plant the ball into the net just before the break.

The pep talk from coach Alfred Muli did little to rejuvenate the spirits of the trailing side and just three minutes into the restart, Engesha completed her brace with a well taken penalty after Winnie Gwatenda was punished for a dangerous tackle on Nafula.

At the hour mark, it looked like Soccer Queens’ fate was sealed after Topistar widened the gap by beating a lone defender and later on directed a rasping shot at a hapless Soccer Queens goalie who fumbled to get a touch on the ball but to no avail.

It was not game over for Topistar who was out to crown her brace with a hart trick and it all paid off on 70 minutes when a creative build up from Vihiga Queens forwards beat the Soccer Queens defence and left a helpless goalie, yet again , at the mercy of Topistar who chose to take a strike from just outside the box sending the Soccer Queens custodian the wrong way to net a fifth.

Atieno Faith gave the trailing side a consoling goal on the 77th minute with a well executed high header from a free kick but Achieng’ Maurine canceled the goal two minutes later to bag Vihiga’s sixth with an easy header after the goalie charged forward to save the imminent attack from the Vihiga Queens forwards leaving the goal unattended.
