Yego, Chemutai win Eldoret City Marathon titles

Elkana Kibet Yego and Sharon Chemutai Cherop went into the history books on Sunday when they became the first ever winners of the Eldoret City Marathon.

Yego clocked 2:12:44 to win’s the men’s race in a tight finish, beating Philip Cheruiyot Kangongo by five seconds. Brian Kipsang came a second behind Cheruiyot for third place.

The women’s race was less dramatic with former Boston Marathon winner Chemutai putting daylight between herself and the rest of the field.

The former World bronze medalist stopped the timer in 2:29:57 with Lydia Cheromei (2:33:25) and Jane Jelagat Seurei (2:33:46) sealing the top three places.

The winners pocketed KSh3 million each, while the first runners-up bagged KSh1.5 million as the third finishers went home KSh1 million shillings richer.
