Yego shames desecrated Kasarani training track

World men Javelin champion, Julius Yego, slammed authorities on Tuesday for allowing the training track at Moi International Sports Stadium, Kasarani to host a private function and debris left at the scene for over a week, rendering it unfit for use by athletes preparing for the forthcoming season that culminates with the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Writing on his Facebook wall, the athlete who made history as the first Kenyan field event champion at the biennial IAAF showpiece in Beijing, China said such activities rob sports persons preparing for the upcoming track and field season a chance to train in a clean environment at the only facility that has a training tartan in Nairobi.

Yego complained beer, water and plastic bottles as well as broken glass were left lying everywhere saying such actions were tantamount to killing talent that the country pretends to support.

The two-time African and Commonwealth champion accused officials at the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture as well as Sports Stadia Management Board of sleeping on the job.

“It’s so shameful!!Imagine this is the warm up area Kasarani stadium deem okay for training! Beer, water and all sorts of plastics n broken glasses everywhere!!!@its killing the talents we pretend to support @@the ministry of sports n in charge the stadia are sleeping people how can you allow a big function to be staged inside a stadium worse in a tartan track a tent is raise on it!!!@shameonyou…!” Yego posted.

The party he is referring to is the Safaricom Jazz Festival hosted there last Sunday with the integrated communications giants having acquired the naming rights to the Kasarani Complex.

“This stadium is stress; we are using the grass ground outside the main stadium. It’s in a bad state, if you came to the stadium and saw how it is, the training ground is pathetic. I want to go to the gym now since I can’t waste the day.

“We can’t train at all. It has been like this since last week. I can see them cleaning up and it cannot be done until Friday since the mess is all over the training pitch,” Yego later told Citizen on phone.

The ‘You Tube Man’ who was named the Sports Personality of the Year at the 2015 SOYA Awards is preparing to chase history once again as the first ever Kenyan Javelin winner at the Rio Olympics in the summer.

Yego returned to the country last week from a training stint abroad and will continue with his build up ahead of the start of the 2016 IAAF Diamond League in May in a season where he is the man to beat in Javelin.
