Zico leading Gor preps for Everton friendly

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia on Thursday resumed training ahead of their trip to Liverpool where they will play in a preseason friendly.

Gor won the right to play the Merseyside club after winning the second edition of the Super Cup with a 2-0 win over Tanzania’s Simba SC in the final at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, July this year.

Assistant coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno takes charge of the side in the absence of head coach Dylan Kerr, who is already in England.

Assistant secretary general Ronald Ngala confirmed to Citizen Digital that all players are in camp, underscoring the seriousness the club is approaching the match with.

“It’s a historic match for us. Everton have never played any African team at their ground, and they are also taking this seriously.

“We have to do the same because it’s an opportunity to show they world we are made of, ” said Ngala.

K’Ogalo will travel to Liverpool via London on November 2, where they will link up with their coach Kerr before watching Everton’s home match against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

The league champions will then train at the club before the game on November 6, with all players set to travel.

This will be Gor’s second match against Everton, after their July 2017 meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

High-profile friendly

The 17-time league champions  were set to host Brazilian giants Santos FC at the Kasarani Stadium on December 1 in yet another high-profile friendly but Ngala say the exact date of not yet confirmed .

“The Santos match is still work in progress because we have not confirmed everything, knowing the congestion of fixtures we expect towards the end of November and early December. We are still working on logistics on how to make it work out,” explained Ngala.

After the signing of midfielder  Kenneth Muguna and defender Shafiq Batambuze, the club wants to add at least a striker before the new KPL season  and continental assignment begins next month.

“We would like to have the best squad for next season’s assignments but we are facing financial challenges that might stop us from getting our targets. We are hoping that we will add one more strikers, but that can be confirmed after the England tour,” he concluded.
