Zoo hold Tusker, Leopards down Mount Kenya

Danson Chetambe scored a stunning late free-kick to help Zoo Kericho FC secure a 2-2 draw in a thrilling Kenyan Premier League (KPL) contest at the Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi.

It salvaged a crucial point for the relegation-threatened visitors who had to come back twice having fell a goal down in the 17th minute when David Majak ripped through the defence for the opener. 

Bernard Odhiambo hit the reply 20 minutes later to ensure both sides went into the break on even terms after a captivating 45 minutes.

Boniface Muchiri put the hosts in front again in the 76th minute before Chetambe levelled the tie again with three minutes left of the clock.

In Machakos, Boniface Mukhekhe returned to punish his former club as his second half brace inspired AFC Leopards’ 2-0 victory over the already relegated Mount Kenya United.

After a barren opening half, Leopards head coach Casa Mbungo opted to withdraw Vincent Oburu for Mukhekhe and also brought Wayi Yeka for Brian Marita in a double substition.

It proved a fruitful change as the two brought more attacking threat with Mukhekhe finding the breakthrough in the 74th minute and then doubling his money in stoppage time.

Mbungo hailed his boys for the victory which came just three days after they had lost 3-1 to arch-rivals Gor Mahia FC who clinched the title on Wednesday.

“The game was fantastic though we failed to score early but the boys have done us proud to win. Mukhekhe came in knowing that he has to prove a point and show that he is worthy to be in the starting eleven and that is why he has scored the goals,” he said

Mt. Kenya captain Kelvin Thairu has on the side has rued a number of mistakes which contributed to the defeat .

“We came to win, but those small mistakes have cost us. We are relegated and so the two remaining matches wile will just play to finish the season, as you know we are really struggling financially and that is it,” he said.
