Family of 11-year-old girl who died from snake bite seeks compensation
Nancy Mukami died while being rushed to Ishiara Level 4 Hospital in Embu county, 50 kilometres away after nearby hospitals in Mwingi North lacked anti-venom.
The family and local leadership called for the government to compensate the kin.
The compensation of snake bite victims was stopped in 2019 following amendments to Kenya Wildlife Service laws.
Following ammendments to the laws, residents were advised to clear bushes around their homesteads to avoid snakes finding hideouts nearby
Josephat Mukiri, a relative of the deceased and chairperson of the burial committee, said, “We lost Mukami when the snake made its way to the homestead and first killed four chickens. When the mother heard noise, she went to check what was happening and the snake made its way to the main house and attacked one of the children.”
Mukiri also decried the poor state of roads, saying trying to navigate them led to loss of precious time when trying to ferry Mukami to a bigger hospital.
